Competition Time

Forms, tools, techniques; you now have everything you need to make cool sand sculptures. Now what? I say: it’s time to enter a competition!

Throughout the United States, towns and organizations hold sand sculpting events from April to November. Some competitions are one-day events for participation by individuals, families, or groups. Other events are weekend-long or week-long events with invited professional sand sculptures competing but also offer amateur competitions on one of the days. These latter events are great for watching the master sculptors and being inspired by their work.

Registration is required to participate in a competition. Some events ask participants to preregister on-line while others take on-site registrants the morning of the competition. Amateur competitions typically begin at 9:00 or 10:00 am and run until 2:00 or 3:00 pm. Some provide barrels of water for sculptors’ use while most have you get water from the ocean. Plots are often around 6′ x 6′ and you bring your own tools and equipment. Some competitions have a theme each year and you’ll want to plan your piece to fit the theme. If no theme, you are free to sculpt whatever you can in the time and space allowed. The competition, and therefore the awards, will have categories such as adult, family, and children’s age groups. The registration will indicate the maximum number of participants in a group and all other rules.

Below is a sample list of events for 2021. An on-line search will take to you these or others that may be in your area. So, get your toolkit, your creativity, and any fellow sculptors together and find a competition today!
